So like buses, not a post for ages and now they all come along at the same time.
So today was the mixed club champs and I made it up the club about 8:30 for a bit of breckie and some preparation of the cards etc with Melissa. Today I was playing at 9:45 with Sally-Ann Cusition along side Jerry and Sandra Stobbs. We played well with Sally-Ann getting a birdie for net eagle on the 4th and after 12 we got to 4 under. However after this my short game deserted me and 3 x 3 putts plus a couple of bad chips meant we ended up back at level, but we played well and another day it would have been ours to win.(i often wonder how many others have the same story after golf)
After some controversy the format for the day was fourball betterball and I think this proved to be the best format for the day. It kept everybody in the game all the way round and there was a very small range of scores and in all circumstances both partners had major contributions.
At the end of the day Sue Beaumont and Mick Clark played very well for a magnificent 5 under 67. At the turn they were 8 under and Sue would have had 28 points off her own handicap so Congratulations and well played to everyone.
I would just like to thank Melissa who persuaded me that this was a good event to add to an already busy diary and has also donated the trophy for the Championship and organised the day. I can't wait till next year and I hope we can all agree to keep the same format and we can increase the entries for next year.

Pleased it went well. I guess there will be on-going debate about the format but I think Greensomes would be better suited to establish a best pairs. In Greensomes, aside from the drive, the contribution is equal from both players, on every hole, for whole round. In 4BBB, there is the chance that one players "off day" is compensated for the others "good day" - are they really the best pair ? The Bader Cup, the only "major" mixed event I'm aware of with a significant prize, is played as a Greensome.
ReplyDelete4BBB was a good format for this event as it's not the Bader Cup and there is no trip to Portugal. It's a Slinfold comp mixed event. In 4BBB each person takes every shot so there's nowhere to hide if only certain aspects of your game are going well, like putting. Greensomes can't be equal if you haven't had to make a long put in several holes or a short chip etc.
ReplyDeleteSorry, can't agree at all. Of course there's somewhere to hide if certain aspects of your game are off..... your partner !! Look at the winning pair, they were well under par due to one players excellent performance against handicap on the front nine. In Greensomes, because you have to play alternate shots you both have be on your game, which I thought was the object of best mixed pairs, not "which of the two of us is playing better today".
ReplyDeleteI also agree that 4BBB was the correct format. I and many others would not have played if it were Greensomes.
ReplyDeleteThe results proved that just 2 shots seperated the top 4, which made it very close and obviously fair amongst everyone with this format.
Sue played well in the first 9 and Mick played well in the second 9 so it wasn't because of just one player, both players contributed. In fact, Mick had 2 pars on the front 9 which counted and Sue contributed on the last 3 holes. Therefore it wasn't due to one persons performance on the front 9.
In Greensomes both players are not using all their skills on every hole as it could be several holes before you need to make a put or chip or pitch or long iron etc.
Anyway, it appears there are arguments for and against but I hope it remains the same next year as the format must be consistent from now on otherwise it will become a farce.
Well if you really want to make it a day where there is no place to hide on the golf course, where very shot played by each person has to count, for every one to have their fair share of every type of shot required why not make it the purest form of pairs golf, namely foursomes??!!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the excitement this has caused. This is Slinfold not the Ryder Cup!!!
