This Week at the Club

Been a busy week for me at the Club, this started on Monday when we had the Mens Committee Meeting. Nothing much to report but we have agreed that for the Mens Club Championship this year we will be providing a fully subsidised meal from the funds on the second day (Sunday July 12th) for all players. We have not decided what this will be yet but probably a BBQ.
On Wednesday I attended a seminar held by Ryan, called Deep Effective Practice. This lasted one and half hours and discussed all the fundamentals required to improve your game. I won't give any of Ryans secrets away but it is was great evening and I have taken a lot away from it, particularly how I practice on the Range. It was very interesting to hear Paul McHale quoting Bob Rotella, something I thought I would never hear. It is clear that to get better we all need to spend effective time, and of course Money. But it is also clear that fitness helps and with the Gym we can all spend a little time getting fitter, as this costs nothing with the golf membership.
So on the weekend and time to play at last. Time being the correct word as when I arrived on the tee for my 9:08 time on Saturday there was a clock on the bench. I was glad to see that we were early at the tee and it was a good reminder just before we went out to keep up pace of play (it is about time I wrote something on Slow Play, so I will do that later this week). However when I saw this was an Alarm Clock I had a mischievous idea to set the alarm for 9:32, Tee Time for the Ladies comp. But I showed remarkable restraint and as Club Captain thought I better set a better example, so I left the clock alone. The Golf was good as I played skins with Rob E and JJ. However it was one of those days when i managed to half the holes as others won them. This was summed up on the 4th when I holed a 25ft putt for birdie only for Rob to hole his 23ft Putt for a half. So I ended up without one skin or nearest the Pin. Rob had 11 Skins and 1 NP and JJ 1 Skin and 2NP. I then spent 2 hours in the Gym working on the Calorie Burn, this was my fourth visit this week and I have done over 2000 in the week, but we are still 20,000 behind Cranleigh. So get in the Gym and burn some calories and sign a card, lets try to beat them.
Sunday was Competition day and we ended up with 61 players. This is a great as last year in the same comp there were only 31. It just shows how Slinfold is thriving as a golf club and it is fantastic to see all the new members entering and enjoying the Comps. I played with Richard Clegg and Mick Clark, and I played well until the 14th. I played the first 13 holes 2 over gross and that was after 3 putting both 2 and 7. When I got to 14 I started to think about how well I was scoring and went on to double bogey 14 and 16, I then lost a ball on 18 and ended up with 7 there too. So 2 over for first 13 and 6 over for last 5. I think I need to work on the mental side of the game and stop thinking score while I am playing, but I did make second in Div 1 with 37 points so not too bad.
Well back to work tomorrow and then Liason Meeting Monday Evening. Next weekend we play the Mail On Sunday competition against Gatton Manor and the Mens team is Paul McHale, Nick Baker, Rob England, Brian Johnston and Myself. Lets hope we can beat our local rivals and move on the next round.
