As I am writing this I am also watching the World Golf Championship. It is great to see these top Pro's battle out in matchplay, in my view one of the best formats of the game. The course in Arizona looks fantastic, a green oasis in the middle of the desert, and at over 7,800 yards a monster course, but the ball does travel further. Would love to go and play out there, looks fantastic.
So back to reality, and when I woke up Saturday morning there was a heavy frost and when I got in the -2. So Long Johns and four layers needed today. The format for the competition this morning is Greensomes, both players drive off and then you choose the best and then it is alternate shot from then on. with 30 teams (60 People) entered is was a great field and again good to see that everybody is entering into the competitions. I was playing with Rob Croxford and interestingly the random draw meant we were grouped with Banham and Edwards again. Of course it was decided on the first Tee we should have little wager on the most points scored so we decided the lowest Stableford Points would buy the beer. Rob and I received 13 strokes as it is 60% of lower H/Cap and 40% of higher (18 and 9). We started well with pars on 1st and 2nd but on the third we both had bad tee shots and could only end up with 7 for no score. At this stage the greens were very icy and you had to play very imaginative shots to hold the green, but by the time we hit the back 9 it did thaw out and we could start to fire at the green again. We continued to play reasonably well until we reached the 7th and managed to 3 putt from 6ft but a birdie at the 9th meant we had gone out over and made 20 Points, however Banham and Edwards has somehow made 21. On the back 9 we continues to play very steadily and when we got back to back birdies on 15 and 16 (oh yes a 2 that will pay for a few beers) we were only 6 over gross, a bogey on 17 and par on 18 saw us home with 42 points and I am glad to say the beer was ours. Our 2 points also put us in second place overall but we were well beaten by Nigel Bradshaw & Graham Merry who made 45.
On Sunday it was raining very heavily when we arrived at the club. 7 of us turned up for our friendly and in the end six of us decided to go out. As we were in 2 x 3 balls we decided to play a team event, best 2 scores to count, full handicap. The first four holes were very tough but I did manage a 2 on the 2nd. But I played the next 14 holes very well just, just 1 over with 1 birdie and 2 bogeys. I was playing with JJ and Davie Robertson and they played equally well, and we managed to get 89 Points, which was more than enough to take to money.
I am glad to see the Captains Drive-In is now full up, with 132 players entered. I hope this will be a great day and we will have some good weather.
