Rob kindly decided to drive us all there and we arrived in plenty of time for the traditional warm up of a full English. We to went to the putting green, and for some reason this was a putting green that was set on a hill. So there was nowhere to get a flat putt to gauge the pace. We thought it was strange, until we went out to play and found out all the greens were on hills so the putting green was right.
We decided to play skins as it is always a bit of fun including nearest the pins, and with 3 par 3's I hoped these would help me get a bit of return on my money having to give 3,4 and 14 shots after my "shiny new handicap" was let out to play for the first time. The first was halved in bogeys and we got to second, a short par 4, 283 off the yellows, a chance I thought to get myself ahead of the bandits I was playing with it is stroke index 16, no shots. I hot my drive to about 20 yards and the rest of the boys were at least 80-110 yards away. Paul D was first to play, form about 100 yards, and he hit a great shot to about 30 feet left of the pin, which then continued to roll down the side of hill, only to stop just on the edge of the hole....for about 5 seconds, before it finally dropped in. I did not see any celebration from Paul, and realised I was the only one up close enough to see it go in. A little explanation with handsigns later and Paul realised he had his first eagle in golf. So we just had to hole ours for a half. Unfortunately not, I made birdie but it was not good enough.
For the rest of the day we had some great fun, with lots of "champagne moments". these included:
1. Myself driving 325 yards into a fairway ditch on a par 5, only to hit my 2nd/3rd shot to 6 feet for a birdie putt (which I missed)2. All three of my playing partners landing in a bunker on the right, within 3 feet of each other, but only after my tee shot had hit the middle of a tree on the left placing it 210 yards up in the middle of the fairway. One of these then proceeded to hit a three wood onto the green from here and make par to win the hole.
3. One of my playing partners, taking three tee shots on a par three, and putting all in a different part of the lake protecting the green (come on England)
So a good day and very interesting course, lots of water and some very testing greens. The condition of the course was very similar to Slinfold, and it was interesting to talk to some members afterward who said "sorry about the greens". As normal at this time of year they had all been tined and were a little inconsistent.
Today we played golf as it should sometimes be played, for fun and going for everything, we forget sometimes that this is a hobby for us and should always be played to be enjoyed, sometimes it is a little serious but most of the time we should just enjoy it.
Rob ended up with the worst S/Ford points but most of the skins and I did win 4 out the five nearest the pins so my plan worked.
